Ole Ukena is a German artist from Berlin who spent 2012 in the newly-established Thaillywood Contemporary Artist Residency in Thailand. Having recently participated in an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Ole Ukena debuts his work here at Serindia Gallery, an exhibiting gallery partner with Thaillywood Contemporary Artist Residency. Both Thaillywood and Serindia Gallery are committed to providing a new residency and exhibition platform for Thai as well as non-Thai artists, to collaborate in artistic practices and fosters intercultural exchange.

Giving Up is Not an Option is a resulting works of Ukena’s residency throughout 2012 at Thaillywood. His conceptually-driven practice includes en eclectic mix of media ranging from sculpture, text, photography, drawing, collage, and film. The exhibition is a journey of his artistic process over the past year, circling around the subject of interrelating opposites. Humor is a strong binding element in Ukena’s work. Bricks, matches, rubber ducks, toy soldiers, feathers and barb wire find its way into Ukena’s recent body of work, creating a bewildering mixture of attraction and repulsion to the objects. Each material is precisely chosen because of its inherent implications and preexisting set of emotional values that come with it. The viewer is left at a good starting point to explore deeper layers of interpretation pertaining to subjects such as social criticism, personal success and failure, collective psychological imprints, and the absurdities of the world we live in.

โอเล่ อุคีนา เป็นศิลปินเยอรมันจากกรุงเบอร์ลินผู้ซึ่งได้ใช้ชีวิตในปี 2555 เป็นศิลปินพำนับ (resident artist) ในเมืองไทยที่บ้านศิลปินพำนับไทยลีวูด (Thaillywood Contemporary Artist Residency) จังหวัดชลบุรี  การแสดงงานผลงานของศิลปินจากบ้านศิลปินพำนับไทยลีวูดนี้ เป็นการร่วมมือครั้งแรกของเซรินเดีย แกเลอรี่และไทยลีวูด เป็นการแนะนำบ้านศิลปินพำนับไทยลีวูด ให้ศิลปินไทย ต่างชาติ และผู้สนใจได้รู้จัก และเปิดโอกาสให้มีการแลกเปลี่ยนทฤษฎีและการปฏิบัติของศิลปินตะวันตกและศิลปินไทย เป็นการแลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์และความรู้ ให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ทางศิลปะและผลงานใหม่ ๆ อีกทั้งเป็นจุดเริ่มของโอกาสทางการแสดงงานของศิลปินทั้งในประเทศไทยและต่างประเทศ

นิทรรศการ “การยอมแพ้ไม่ใช่ทางเลือก” เป็นผลงานของ โอเล่  อุคีนาที่ได้สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นมาที่บ้านศิลปินพำนับไทยลีวูดเมื่อปีที่ผ่านมา (2555) งานของเขาเน้นการสื่อคอนเซ้ปต์ของงานผ่านวัสดุหลายแบบ  วัสดุต่างๆที่เขาเลือกใช้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นพลาสติก อิฐ ไม้ขีดไฟ หรือ ลวดหนาม ล้วนเกี่ยวกับคอนเซปต์ของ “ความตรงกันข้าม” ของความคิดที่แยกกันไม่ออก วัสดุที่ใช้อาจจะเป็นวัสดุที่มีความหมายของอารมณ์อย่างหนึ่ง แต่โอเล่ทำให้เห็นความหมายที่แตกต่างและตรงข้ามของมันอย่างคาดไม่ถึง ความประทับใจครั้งแรกของผู้ชม เป็นเพียงจุดเริ่มต้นที่ผู้ชมจะได้ค้นหาความหมายของงานที่โอเล่นำเสนอ ความหมายของงานที่ผู้ชมค้นพบ อาจเกี่ยวกับเรื่องส่วนตัว สังคม จิตวิทยา หรือแม้กระทั่งความไร้สาระบางอย่างของโลกใบนี้

CRE8 Foundation is a worldwide community of artists and collaborators who inspire and unite children around the globe through collaborative art since 2008.

At the beginning of 2012, we started a collaboration with the artist residency Thaillywood in Nongketyai in Chonburi, Thailand, conducting art workshops with children at the local school.

It is our great pleasure to present our exhibition that will take place in Bangkok for the first time. CONNECTED CREATIVITY is an exhibition of global creative collaboration showing the outcome of creative workshops that have been done by kids in over 30 countries around the world.

This will be held in an exhibition space provided by Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). Opening Reception Saturday 5 January. With a special event Fundraising Silent Auction, from 10 selected art pieces and all proceeds will go directly back into the organization, allowing us to reach more kids.

นิทรรศการศิลปะของเราจัดขึ้นในพิพิธภัณฑ์และศูนย์ศิลปะในหลากหลายประเทศ เป้าหมายคือนำ เสนอความเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียว กันของผลงานที่เกิดจากการเชื่อมต่อของพลังสร้างสรรค์จากเด็กๆกว่า 30 ประเทศทั่วโลก
และพวกเรารู้สึกเป็นเกียรติ อย่างยิ่งที่จะนำเสนอนิทรรศการล่าสุด ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศไทยแก่ท่าน ในครั้งนี้เราได้รับการสนับสนุนด้านพื้นที่จากหอศลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร

ซึ่งพิธีเปิดนิทรรศการจะจัดขึ้นในวันเสาร์ที่ 5 มกราคม เริ่มเวลา 17.00 น. พร้อมกับกิจกรรมระดมทุนประมูลเงียบ ผลงานของเด็กๆผู้เข้าร่วมโครงการ

15.000 nails  can leave you a bit puzzled. At a recent studio visit by a group of local kids I got asked: “Does the artist sleep here at night?”
I admit to  have late night sessions at times but if I had to choose a piece on which to rest on it certainly would not be “trust”.

At times the beauty of a piece is actually the unfinished feel of it.  Might that very well be so with this piece ?

A blue house surrounded by lush green, tropical scenery. Next to it is an even bigger golden house that looks a bit like the Guggenheim  museum with lots of round curves and gigantic dimension.  Birds are singing their songs in strange voices, people speak with what seems to be 90% vowels and the smell of spicy ingredients comes out poking your nose at every street corner.  Where am I and why am I here?

I got invited to come and stay for the year of 2012 at the “Thaillywood Contemporary Artist Residency”  which lies 90 minutes outside of Bangkok to live  and work as an artist. But also to build the structures for a fruitful partnership between the artist residency and CRE8 Foundation. But let me explain you how i got here…

The project of the artist residency here in Thailand is something pretty new as the contemporary art scene is still growing and not so many structures exist in this country. How many Thai artists can you name out of the head? (If you can name two you are doing pretty well, I had only Rirkrit Tiravanija in my mind ) The whole project here got initiated by Marie & Hugues Taittinger who are passionate socially minded art collectors from Brussel/Paris and love the country and wanted to give back by sharing their passion for art  and by building up a one of a kind place for western and asian artists to live and work in.
Many artist residencies exist in the world and each one has it´s distinctive profile. Thaillywood aims to connect artist form the East and West during their working period to offer the opportunity of an ongoing exchange. But there´s also the social component of the residency which is the main reason CRE8 has teamed up with it.

The two organizations joined forces  for a really beautiful project. The general idea of the collaboration is that each artist that comes for a scholarship at the residency will collaborate with CRE8 and use the methodologies to come up with one of a kind collaborative art workshops that will be conducted with the local community – in this case the kids from the surrounding area. Professional artists will be part-time art teachers to share their creative process and involve the kids in a journey towards their own full creative potential. You get a residency but you also share your talent and give back to the community that you live in. Give & take so to speak. Bi-annual exhibitions will invite art lovers as well as the surrounding community to follow up on the results of the professional artist as the kids.

CRE8 is known for creating collaborative art projects that connect different cultures with each other to show the beauty that lies within valuing each single perspective that contributes to a bigger artwork.  To give you an example of what is to come I want to shortly introduce you to one specific project that we started here last year.

D.A.S. project connects three countries to create an animation film together and is divided  in the following different work steps:

• Phase 1: Drawing in Thailand
• Phase 2: Animation in California
• Phase 3: Soundtrack in Colombia

I dig walls. Not Jeff in this case but the ones you find standing around in Colombia.

Old ones, tracing back the colonial background, bright colorful ones in which the saltwater has been engraving fascinating prints.
In Cartagena they seem to be all over the place and once you start to open up your eyes to their beauty and strangeness the city reveals another layer.
There´s actually little other countries I have been to that had walls that were more fascinating to me. Number one might still be India but if I think about it more it´s probably more the weird wall drawings that i admire there and not the walls themselves.
I took a day off and walked around Cartagena to document this Colombian Wallhalla and here´s what I saw:
